Teacher Tells Muslim Student that He Must Support ‘Pride’ to be Canadian

'You don’t belong here, and I mean it...'

(Abdul–Rahman Oladimeji Bello, Headline USA) A teacher in Canada recently went viral on social media for telling a Muslim student who opted out of the school’s LGBT “Pride” event that he didn’t “belong here.”

In the two-minute audio clip, the teacher at Londonderry Junior High School in Edmonton, Alberta, scolded a student going by the name Manzur for “hanging out at the mall” instead of attending a school even in support of the gay community.

“You are out to lunch if you think it’s acceptable to not show up because … there’s Pride activities going on at school,” she said.

The teacher said that if Muslim students wanted to be accepted for who they were and avoid all sorts of prejudice, then they likewise had to showrespect to “people who are different” from them.

She noted that the LGBT community in the school had shown support to Muslims by respecting the Islamic holidays.

“They’re here when we did Ramadan… And they’re showing respect in the class for your religion, for your beliefs,” she said.

The teacher continued her lecture, referencing African countries like Uganda, where homosexual acts can be punishable by a life sentence or, according to the teacher, punishable by execution.

“If you believe that kind of thing, then you don’t belong here, because that is not what Canada believes,” she said.

“We believe in freedom, we believe that people can marry whomever they want, that is in the law, and if you don’t think that should be the law, you can’t be Canadian,” she added. “You don’t belong here, and I mean it.”

A spokesperson for Edmonton Public Schools confirmed to The Blaze the authenticity of the recording circulating on social media, which the school believes a student may have secretly recorded.

“The school and Division are taking steps to address the situation,” said the statement. “Due to the Division’s legislated privacy obligations, we are not able to provide any further information.”
