Ted Cruz Blasts Justice Sotomayor, Says It's Time to Focus on Liberal 'Activist' Judges

(Claire Russel, Liberty Headlines) Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, turned the tables on Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor for attacking her conservative colleagues in a recent dissenting opinion and undermining the legitimacy of the bench.

Sotomayor complained about her colleagues after the Supreme Court sided with the Trump administration 5-4 over its new public charge immigration rule, which will allow the administration to take immigrants’ dependence on the government into consideration when granting green cards and visas.

“It is hard to say what is more troubling,” Sotomayor wrote in her dissenting opinion, “that the Government would seek this extraordinary relief seemingly as a matter of course, or that the Court would grant it.”

For Sotomayor to accuse her colleagues of bias is “like an arsonist complaining about the noise from the fire trucks,” Cruz said, according to Fox News.

The Trump administration would never have had to fight for the public charge rule before the Supreme Court if liberal judges weren’t granting an nationwide injunction after nationwide injunction, he said.

“If you look to the facts of what’s happening with nationwide injunctions, I think it will explain why the Department of Justice has had to ask the Supreme Court to intervene over and over again,” he said. “In the eight years of the George W. Bush administration, district courts issued a total of 12 universal injunctions against the Bush administration. In the eight years of the Obama administration, district courts issued 19 universal injunctions against the Obama administration. In just three years of the Trump administration, we have already had 55 national universal injunctions issued against the federal government.”

The Justice Department is simply fighting back against the “partisan political activists” masquerading as judges, Cruz continued.

“I believe we have a handful of judges who are operating effectively as part of the resistance movement, putting themselves in the way of Trump policies they happen to disagree with,” he said.

(Claire Russel, Liberty Headlines) Hunter Biden asked the Arkansas judge overseeing his child support case to delay the deposition until April 1 — after some important primary elections involving his father Joe have taken place, according to a court motion obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

Biden’s attorney, Brent Langdon, argued in the court hearing that the original date for the deposition hearing — which is scheduled for next week — is “unduly burdensome and oppressive.”

Lawyers for Lunden Alexis Roberts, the mother of Biden’s 18-month-old baby, gave Biden two options for the deposition hearing: it could take place on March 3 — which is Super Tuesday — or on March 5.

“Let me know what day works best for your client. If your client hasn’t picked a day by tomorrow at 5 p.m., I will pick the day,” Roberts’s lawyer, Jennifer Lancaster, wrote to Langdon in a Feb. 17 email.

“My client can be available April 1, 2020,” Langdon replied. “My client cannot be available prior to that date.”

Biden’s request to delay the deposition hearing could be an attempt to shield Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden from scrutiny while he campaigns in key primary states.

But this isn’t the first time Hunter Biden has tried to avoid taking responsibility for the child he fathered.

He publicly denied that the child was his until a DNA test confirmed that it is.

And he claimed in another court filing last November that he should not have to pay child support because he has “no monthly income,” even though he has been renting a $12,000-per-month home in Hollywood Hills with his wife, Melissa Cohen.

“One thing that I don’t have to do is sit here and open my kimono as it relates to how much money I make or make or did or didn’t,” Hunter Biden told ABC News. “But it’s all been reported.”

Because of Hunter Biden’s unwillingness to comply with the court’s demands, Roberts’s lawyers have asked the judge to hold him in contempt of court.

“The defendant continues to act as though he has no respect for this Court, its orders, the legal process in this state, or the needs of his child for support,” Roberts’s lawyers said.

(Claire Russel, Liberty Headlines) Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., whose platform opposes the Trump administration’s pro-school choice policies, once bragged about getting her goddaughter into a competitive charter school in New York, according to the New York Post.

A video in 2017 shows Ocasio-Cortez, who was not yet in office, telling her Facebook followers, “This area’s like a lot of where my family is from. My goddaughter, I got her into a charter school like maybe a block or two down.”

Among Ocasio-Cortez’s leftist base, school choice is decried as a policy that hurts traditional public schools and teachers.

Even moderate Democrats have fiercely opposed Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’s efforts to expand school choice into low-income communities, often siding with the teacher’s unions over the minority voters desperate for the chance to send their kids to better schools.

“Charter schools act as tools for privatizing education and weakening the power of unionized teachers,” the Democratic Socialist Party says in its New York City platform, which called for ending “the creation of new charter schools, [banning] the expansion of existing charter schools, and transform[ing] existing charter schools into public schools.”

DeVos pointed out this hypocrisy, arguing that Ocasio-Cortez would “deny that opportunity to every other disadvantaged family in America,” but gladly use it for her own goddaughter.

Ray Domanico, the Manhattan Institute’s director of education policy, said he’s “not surprised” Ocasio-Cortez wants for herself what she’d deny to others.

“Charter schools are incredibly popular with the communities and populations that a lot of these Democratic politicians claim to be representing,” he explained. “People in the Bronx can find a good school for their young ones now as the congresswoman apparently did for her goddaughter.”

‘Well short of what is needed to fully finance Medicare for All…’

(Claire Russel, Liberty Headlines) Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders released a list on Monday that details how he plans to pay for his trillion-dollar proposals.

But the numbers don’t add up.

Even CNN’s Chris Cuomo noticed that Sanders’s additional tax proposals would not cover the $16.3 trillion he wants for the Green New Deal, the $30+ trillion he’d need to implement “Medicare for All,” and the $2 trillion it would require to wipe out all student loan debt.

On “Medicare for All,” Sanders identified nine ways his administration would finance the plan. A 4% income-based premium for employees would generate $4 trillion. A 7.5% income-based premium on employers would raise $5.4 trillion. Eliminating current healthcare expenditures would bring in about $5.2 trillion. Taxing capital gains would net another $5.2 trillion. And restoring the federal corporate tax to 35% would bring in about $1 trillion, his plan states.

In total, that’s only $17.5 trillion — less than half of “Medicare for All’s” projected cost.

Sanders also claimed he would pay for the Green New Deal by imposing new taxes on the fossil fuel industry and by cutting defense spending.

And the College for All Act — Sanders’s proposed student loan debt forgiveness plan — would be funded by a tax on Wall Street speculation.

(Claire Russel, Liberty Headlines) After evidence emerged that members of former special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigative team withheld information from the courts and Congress, House Republicans said they are considering taking action against them.

That action would most likely be a criminal referral, according to Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., the former House Intelligence Committee chairman who is now ranking member.

“We’re now going through these 302s, and we’re going to be making criminal referrals on the Mueller dossier team, the people that put this Mueller report together,” Nunes told investigative reporter John Solomon of Just the News.

Nunes specifically referred to declassified FBI memos that prove at least one of Mueller’s team members withheld potentially exculpatory information about former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopolous, and his willingness to work with the FBI during Mueller’s investigation.

These memos are “our first evidence of the Mueller team lying to the court,” Nunes explained. “It’s a lie. It’s a total lie.”

Papadopolous tried to help the FBI locate a key witness named Joseph Mifsud, according to the memos obtained by Solomon through a FOIA request.

But in his sentencing recommendation, Mueller team member Aaron Zelinsky claimed Papadopolous obstructed the Mueller team’s attempts to find Mifsud.

“I always assumed that Papadopolous probably was helpful. I mean, he’s kind of alluded to that, that he offered to be helpful, but we had never seen the actual [memos],” Nunes said.

If Nunes moves forward with criminal referrals, the Justice Department would need to investigate Mueller’s team members and/or review the accuracy of Mueller’s final report, according to Just The News.

Nunes mentioned U.S. Attorney John Durham, who is currently investigating the origins of Mueller’s investigation. Durham could turn his attention to Mueller’s team, and not just the intelligence community, Nunes said.

(Claire Russel, Liberty Headlines) Declassified FBI memos reveal that at least one of the prosecutors on former special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigative team deliberately ignored vital information when he signed former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos’s sentencing memo, according to a report by Just the News.

The memo, obtained by investigative reporter John Solomon through a FOIA request, revealed that Justice Department prosecutor Aaron Zelinsky claimed “Papadopoulos hindered federal prosecutors’ ability to question or arrest a European professor named Joseph Mifsud in mid-February 2017” while Mueller was investigating allegations of collusion between Trump and Russia.

Zelinsky even argued Papadopolous’s “false statements were intended to harm the investigation.”

Other FBI documents, however, revealed that Papadopolous “expressed willingness to participate actively in helping the bureau locate Mifsud personally.”

Papadopolous told FBI agents he “could potentially meet with Mifsud during a planned trip to London,” according to FBI notes. Papadopolous also told the FBI that Mifsud had recently contacted him and had “indicated that he may be traveling to Washington, D.C. in February 2017.”

Yet none of this was included in Zelinsky’s sentencing recommendation.

Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., told Just The News that these unsurfaced interview notes are proof that “the Mueller team [was] lying to the court.”

“The whole idea seemed nonsensical from the beginning that in the sentencing memorandum they would say that he stalled their investigation into Joseph Mifsud. Now, we know from [these notes] that actually the opposite is true. The truth is that Papadopoulos offered, told the FBI, that Mifsud was going to be in the United States…Now, the sad part is that Papadopoulos served his [time] in jail,” Nunes explained.

The same prosecutor who deliberately ignored these interview notes — Zelinsky — also served on the prosecutorial team that recommended maximum sentencing for Roger Stone, a former Trump associate recently sentenced for lying to Congress and tampering with a witness.

Zelinsky resigned in protest after Attorney General William Barr announced he’d look into the prosecutorial team’s excessive sentencing recommendation.

President Trump has made it clear he distrusts the prosecutorial team associated with the “badly tainted” Mueller investigation.

Barr overruled Zelinsky and the other prosecutors’ lengthy sentencing recommendation, and Judge Amy Berman Jackson agreed: Stone will serve only 40 months.

“I think he’s been treated very unfairly,” Trump said of Stone after the sentencing, arguing that what happened to Stone “should never happen again.”

(Joshua Paladino, Liberty Headlines) Republicans feel greater urgency to win the House and prevent the rule of the new progressive-socialist Democratic Party, new information on candidates running for Congress suggests.
Democrats in 2017 had the momentum, when nearly 1,000 candidates filed to run for the House and Senate, compared to about 700 Republicans, Fox News reported.
But in 2019 Republicans feel inspired to enter the political arena, with 874 candidates filing to run for the House and Senate, compared to 842 Democrats.
Between the impeachment trial and acquittal of President Trump, and radical Democratic policy proposals such as the Green New Deal (climate change) and the New Way Forward Act (immigration), Republicans are ready to fight.
Marjorie Greene, 45, is an entreprenuer who is running her first congressional campaign for the open seat in Georgia’s 14th district.
“I’m tired of seeing my president attacked every day,” she said. “I’m tired of seeing our future threatened. I’m tired of seeing my children’s future extremely threatened, and it’s time to get off the bench and really step up to the plate.”
Greene named Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and her extreme ideas as the reason why conservative women like herself must fight against “tyrannical socialist Democrats.”
“These are radical women that will not bend. They do not want to work across the aisle. They only want their policies of the Green New Deal, ‘Medicare-for-all’ and socialism for America,” Greene said. “Oftentimes, it takes a woman to put another woman in her place.”
The past two election cycles have seen more congressional candidates than any other in history.
During the tea-party wave of 2009, Republicans ran more than 700 candidates while Democrats put up about 500, for a total of 1,323 total candidates.
That record was broken in 2017.
But the record-number 1,739 candidates who filed to run for office in 2017 wasn’t a record for long, as 1,761 candidates filed to run for the House and the Senate in 2019.
Spending, too, has far exceeded the 2017 record of more than $800 million.
Candidates raised nearly $1 billion in 2019, with Democrats taking in 53 percent of the money and Republicans taking in the other 47 percent.

(Claire Russel, Liberty Headlines) Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., will roll out a list of endorsements that includes only female progressive candidates, according to the New York Times.

Ocasio-Cortez plans to endorse more than a dozen congressional candidates across the country, but they must be ideologically as far to the left as she is.

“One of our primary goals is to reward political courage in Congress and also to help elect a progressive majority in the House of Representatives,” she told the Times. “There’s kind of a dual nature to this: One is opening the door to newcomers, and the other is to reward members of Congress that are exhibiting very large amounts of political courage.”

Ocasio-Cortez said she deliberately chose races where she thought her endorsement could help primary challengers.

“Anyone can show up one day and say, ‘I support all these policies; that makes me a progressive,’” she said. “But one of the things that is really important to us is winning.”

A few of her early endorsements include: Cristin Tzintzún, a voting rights activist running against M.J. Hegar, the candidate endorsed by the Democratic Party’s Senate campaign arm, in Texas; Teresa Fernandez, who is running in New Mexico; Samelys López in New York; Georgette Gómez in California; Kara Eastman in Nebraska; Marie Newman, who is challenging Illinois’s Democratic incumbent, Dan Lipinski; and Jessica Cisneros, who is challenging Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar in Texas.

Ocasio-Cortez’s list of endorsements has been seen by many as an attempt to buck the Democratic establishment, since many of these candidates are challenging sitting congressional Democrats.

But Ocasio-Cortez said she doesn’t care.

“It’s important for us to create mechanisms of support because so much of what is happening in Washington is driven by fear of loss,” she said. “We can really create an ecosystem that makes people more comfortable into making the leap to make politically courageous choices.”

(Claire Russel, Liberty Headlines) President Donald Trump’s allies are reportedly assembling a list of “disloyal” government officials and matching them with pro-Trump replacements.

This list has been compiled since 2018, according to Axios, and some of its aggregators include prominent conservatives outside of the White House, such as Ginni Thomas, wife of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and Tom Fitton, president of the conservative nonprofit Judicial Watch.

One of the list associated with Ginni Thomas’s organization, Groundswell, includes State Department employees who actively worked against Trump during former special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, the outlet reports. The list recommends Trump fire several prominent officials in the department, including John Sullivan, the current U.S. ambassador to Russia.

Trump has already used the list at least once, according to Axios. The president withdrew the nomination of Jessie Liu to the Treasury Department after activists associated with these lists urged him against the appointment.

Republican Senate staffer Ledeen reportedly compiled a number of reasons why Trump should ignore Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin’s recommendation of Liu, according to a source with direct knowledge.

Some of these reasons included: Liu’s refusal to act on criminal referrals of some of Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s accusers, her willingness to sign “the sentencing filing asking for jail time” for Gen. Michael Flynn, her opposition to indicting former deputy director of the FBI Andrew McCabe, and more.

News of these memos comes as Trump cracks down on leaks and whistleblowers in his administration since the conclusion of the Senate’s impeachment trial. He recently ousted Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a former National Security Council official who testified agains Trump during the House’s impeachment inquiry, along with Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire.

Trump’s allies have also reportedly compiled a list of potential candidates for positions within Trump’s administration. Some of these candidates include: Sheriff David Clarke for a senior Homeland Security role, former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino for a Homeland Security or counterterrorism adviser role, and radio talk show host Chris Plante for press secretary.

Trump has made it clear that he is committed to rooting out the government employees actively trying to undermine his presidency. He said last week that he now knows the identity of the “resistance” official who penned an op-ed for the New York Times last year declaring that there is an inside-the-White House campaign against the president.

“People know it’s a fraud,” he added. “I know who it is, and I know who some of the leakers are.”

Trump has pointed to the book to make the case that some in his administration, including Obama holdovers, are working to undermine his agenda.

White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham has dismissed the author as a “coward” and the content of the person’s writings as “nothing but lies.”

(Claire Russel, Liberty Headlines) Federal immigration officials finally arrested a violent illegal immigrant who had been arrested and released by New York City’s law enforcement seven different times.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers detained Andre Lloyd Campbell, a Jamaican national who has been charged with multiple counts of disorderly conduct and grand larceny.

Despite ICE’s multiple detainer requests, New York City law enforcement released Campbell again and again.

“Campbell has repeatedly been arrested for local criminal charges, and even through ICE lodged a detainer more than half a dozen times, he was allowed back on to New York City streets to re-offend,” Thomas Decker, ICE’s New York field office director, said in a statement. “What more needs to be said about the way sanctuary city policies continue to shield criminal aliens? What is known is that even with immense public scrutiny, ICE continues to prioritize the safety of New York’s law-abiding residents. Clearly our priorities are in better order than the politicians who run this city.”

New York City is one of several self-proclaimed sanctuary cities the Justice Department has sued due to their efforts to hinder federal immigration officers.

The sanctuary policies that allowed criminals like Campbell to walk free put law enforcement and law-abiding citizens “in harm’s way,” said Attorney General William Barr.

Barr said the Justice Department would be “robustly supporting” federal immigration officials to use “all lawful means,” including federal subpoenas, to obtain information about suspects they are seeking to deport.

“These policies are textbook examples of misguided ideology triumphing over common-sense law enforcement, and it is the public and the police who pay the price,” Barr said.
