(John Ransom, Headline USA) Georgia’s Secretary of State has referred 1,634 cases of non-citizens who were attempting to register to vote for prosecution, in the wake of a citizenship audit that was done in the state over the last few weeks.
“As liberal states and cities around the country are changing their laws to allow noncitizen voting, I will continue to take steps to ensure Georgia’s elections are executed with integrity,” Georgia’s Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said in a statement, according to Epoch Times.
“Leading the state’s first citizenship audit of the voter rolls is an important part of that effort.”
In a press conference announcing the investigation of the noncitizen voters, Raffensperger said that both the people attempting to register illegally and any groups attempting to help them register illegally would face serious consequences.
First – I fully agree that US Citizens should be only people voting in US elections.
2nd – my question was to GA Sec of State asking HIM how many cases of non citizens voting in Georgia. He is proposing MANY election changes, most of which I don’t think are needed or helpful.— Bill Lundeen (@bill_lundeen) January 24, 2022
“Attempting to register to vote while knowing you do not possess the qualifications to vote is a felony in Georgia, a serious one,” Raffensperger said at a news conference Monday, reported News4JAX. “Outside groups that attempt to help noncitizens register to vote will face consequences as well.”
Five Georgia counties accounted for 69% of the fraudulent registrations, said WALB News.
The good news is that none of the noncitizens were allowed to register to vote, but instead were placed in a pending category that allowed authorities to investigate whether these people were really citizens.
In January, the Georgia legislature voted down an amendment to the state constitution that would have specifically prohibited noncitizen voting in the state of Georgia, said the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
The measure fell five votes short of the required 2/3 supermajority for passage of a Georgia constitutional amendment.
While voting by noncitizens is already illegal, a constitutional amendment would prevent the legislature from later attempting to allow noncitizens to vote, as New York has recently done under the Democrats, said the AJC.
