(Jacob Bruns, Headline USA) A fight broke out on a NASCAR track over the weekend, showing that Will Smith is not the only one willing to get in on America’s new favorite pastime, the US Sun reported.
In a race at Martinsville Speedway won by driver Brandon Jones, two other drivers, Ty Gibbs and Sam Mayer, traded blows much to the shock of the fans present.
Gibbs and Mayer grappled on the track after Mayer pulled a maneuver late in the race that ran Gibbs into the wall.
Unfortunately for Gibbs, who had led for most of the race, the move cost him the lead.
He never recovered it, finishing in 8th place.
After the race ended, Gibbs stormed over to Mayer and forcefully pushed him in the chest with both hands. The two then continued to yell at each other, exchanging both words and shoves.
Racetrack officials tried to quell the fight, attempting to get in between the drivers, but both fought through the restraints as the fight went to the ground.
Of course, Will Smith wouldn’t have survived long in such a fight, as he instead resorted to an open-handed slap.
When asked later about the incident, Mayer said, “I just put the bumper to him. He came back over and he was upset and decided to throw a couple punches.”
“I was just trying to get his attention and he took it the wrong way. And he just snapped,” he added.
But according to Gibbs, he just wanted to chat with Mayer.
“I tried to talk to him, and he got all in my face. At that point, we’ve got to start fighting.”
“It’s just frustrating. I just got drove in the fence at the end,” Gibbs concluded.
A NASCAR official was injured during the fight, and had to be taken to the hospital in a stretcher.
