Jussie Smollett Releases Rap Single Pleading Innocence, Attacking Critics

'Smollett reasserts his innocence of his fake hate crime in 2019 and criticizes those who politicized the events...'

(Molly Bruns, Headline USA) Shortly after his release from jail, disgraced actor Jussie Smollett released a single titled “Thank You, God,” after being released from prison for faking a hate crime, The Daily Wire reported.

The song, which was released on several major music streaming services, Smollett reasserts his innocence of his fake hate crime in 2019 and criticizes those who “politicized the events.”

He also thanks God for “showing [him his] enemies.”

A clip of the song was released on his Instagram. Included in the caption was a statement saying proceeds from the song would support the Rainbow Push Coalition, STB Safety and the Illinois Innocence Project.

The lyrics include Smollett insisting that he is innocent, and blames the crime on racism and homophobia:

“It’s like they’re hell-bent on not solving the crime / Taking out the elements of face and trans and homophobia that’s straight taking our lives / But turn around and act like I’m the one that killed the strides.”

He goes on to ask if people believe he was “stupid enough” to kill his career by faking a hate crime:

“But I can’t be mad / Take my ego out / Some people searching for fame / Some people chasing that clout / Just remember this / This ain’t that situation / You think I’m stupid enough to kill my reputation?”

The next verses reference director Lee Daniels and anchor Don Lemon, not blaming them for distancing themselves after his hate crime was revealed to be fake.

The song ends with Smollett saying he is “pushing through the clouds.”

“Thunder’s mad loud / Still I’m pushing through the clouds / All I ever wanted to do was make my people proud / Fame is nothing real, it’s how you make them feel / Celebrity is for the birds, I ain’t no man of steel.”

The song is over five and a half minutes long.

It has fewer than 2,000 views on YouTube as of the publication of this article.
