(Headline USA) Marta Kauffman, co-creator of the hit show Friends, apologized to leftists in a recent interview for “misgendering” character Chandler Bing’s father.
Chandler Bing’s father is referred to throughout the show as a gay man who left his family to star in drag shows. But he should have been referred to as a transgender woman with the proper pronouns, Kauffman claimed.
“Pronouns were not yet something that I understood,” Kauffman told the BBC. “So we didn’t refer to that character as ‘she.’ That was a mistake.”
Kauffman said she regrets referring to Bing’s father as a “father” rather than “mother.”
“We kept referring to her as Chandler’s father, even though Chandler’s father was trans,” she said.
This is the second time in recent weeks that Kauffman has apologized for not making the show, which ran for 10 years through the late 90’s and early 2000’s, woke enough. She even said she was “clearly part of systemic racism in our business” for not making the cast more racially diverse.
“I was unaware of that, which makes me feel stupid,” she said. “That was a very valid, extremely difficult criticism which still… I get emotional about.”
Kauffman also said she recently fired someone on a set of the show she is producing for making a joke about a transgender crew member.
“I fired a guy on the spot for making a joke about a trans cameraperson,” she boasted. “That just can’t happen.”
“I like very much to create an environment where we have a happy set and a happy crew,” she continued. “It’s very important to me that where we are is a safe place, a tolerant place, where there’s no yelling.”
