(Jacob Bruns, Headline USA) Despite a court’s recent halting of the Biden administration’s attempt to remove Title 42, illegal immigrants continue to surge across the unsecured border with Mexico, Breitbart reported.
Approximately 3,600 illegal immigrants crossed the Rio Grande River near Eagle Pass, Texas, over the weekend. Last weekend, approximately 2,800 illegals crossed.
Chief Border Patrol agent Jason Owens tweeted a report of last weekend’s events at the border:
DRT Rewind: This past weekend, Del Rio Sector agents encountered:
•2,849 migrants
•67 Unaccompanied children
•608 Family units
•29 Smuggling loads intercepted
•7 Rescues
•5 Large groups of 100+ pic.twitter.com/PF4bYaFuZl— Chief Patrol Agent Jason D. Owens (@USBPChiefDRT) May 17, 2022
According to Owens, over 608 families entered the United States illegally, as well as 67 unaccompanied children.
Some also posted video footage of the mass crossings.
The U.S. Border Patrol identified most of the illegal immigrants as Honduran nationals, along with some Columbians.
Between April 1 and May 15, over 500,000 migrants crossed America’s southwest border.
The border crossings have increased despite a judge stopping the Biden administration from striking down Title 42, which allowed illegal immigrants to be quickly deported during a health emergency like the COVID-19 pandemic.
U.S. District Judge Robert Summerhays in the Western District of Louisiana issued the order in a case filed by the attorneys general of Arizona, Louisiana and Missouri.
Eventually 21 states joined the lawsuit to keep Title 42 in place.
Texas also filed a separate lawsuit in a federal court in Texas. The attorneys general argue ending Title 42 violates federal law and places an unfair financial burden on the states.
