(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) In an unusual, yet expectable move, several prominent Democrats are throwing their support behind Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, even as calls for his immediate removal from GOP leadership grow bigger.
The alliance between Democrats and McConnell stemmed out of shared interest in protecting the embattled President Joe Biden from impeachment, aid for corruption-filled Ukraine and massive government spending, according to the New York Times.
“He is the devil they know and a very pragmatic leader,” Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., said of why Democrats are supporting McConnell. “And there is no one more shrewd.”
Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., also chimed in, touting McConnell’s opposition to issues of importance for House Republicans.
“There are extremes, mainly in the House, that I worry about, but I think he speaks for the mainstream Republican Party on most issues,” Durbin falsely said, before acknowledging McConnell’s concession to Democrats. “He can play an important role in his own ranks in helping us come up with a bipartisan solution to our challenges,” Durbin added.
This sentiment is not shared by prominent conservative leaders, who in reaction to McConnell’s latest health scare, demanded his immediate ousting. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., took to Twitter on August 30 to demand his resignation.

But Democrats disagree, with one anonymous Democrat senator confiding to the Times that McConnell is an ally. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. echoed this sentiment. “On some things, Leader McConnell and I disagree vehemently,” Schumer stated. “On others, we agree and work together to get done.”
One of the key areas of collaboration between McConnell and Democrats is their shared stance against the impeachment of Biden, who is facing allegations of bribery and political interference in the criminal investigation of his son, Hunter Biden.
McConnell, speaking to the Times on Aug. 8, echoed the Democrats’ talking point against impeachment, despite their onslaught of impeachment articles, not once but twice, against former President Donald Trump.
“Impeachment ought to be rare,” McConnel said, ignoring the Nancy Pelosi precedent. “This is not good for the country.”
Additionally, McConnell has broken ranks with some of his fellow Republicans by opposing a government shutdown, aligning himself with Democrats. “Congress needs to address our nation’s most pressing needs with timely appropriations, and we need to keep the lights on come Oct. 1,” he asserted earlier in the week, the Times reported.
McConnell also rallied support for a contentious $24 billion package for Ukraine despite the eastern European country’s wide web of alleged corruption and countless firings and arrests in recent weeks.
