Texas Sheriff J.E. Guerra called the U.S.-Mexico border “basically open,” blaming President Joe Biden’s lackluster immigration policy, the New York Post reported.
Guerra, a Democrat, is Sheriff of Hidalgo County, which sits on the U.S.-Mexico border.
He said he’s “hopeful” that the Biden administration will “make a decision pretty quick” and plug the hole at the border.
Biden’s relaxed immigration policies have led to a stream of illegal immigrants crossing the border, including unaccompanied minors and entire families.
Those still in Mexico are demanding that Biden let them in.
Border Patrol agents who typically watch the border line have now been pulled to man processing stations due to the massive increase in immigrants.
“If you know how to work that computer, you’re sitting in front of that computer, and they’re calling all the agents on the line to go process,” Guerra said. “So all that does is opens up an opportunity for these smuggling organizations to take advantage of that,”
As a result, criminals and smugglers are able to cross the border with ease.
“They’re calling all the agents on the line to go process. So all that does is opens up an opportunity for these smuggling organizations to take advantage of that,” Guerra said.
The crisis has escalated due to a combination of President Biden’s immigration policies and his administration’s unpreparedness.
“The previous convicted felons and the pedophiles and the people that have been convicted of sexual assault that have been deported, you’ll see those coming across in droves and the cartels know that so they charge them a lot more money,” Guerra explained.
“As the sheriff, you know, the family units and the unaccompanied minors, it does not pose a security threat for me here… the special interest aliens and the aliens that have been previously deported, that are felons… those are the ones that I’m more concerned about as the sheriff,” he continued.
