Biden Faces Bipartisan Push to Protect US from Fentanyl Trafficking

'The cartels have become emboldened and enriched by President Biden's open border policies... '

(Molly Bruns, Headline USA) A bipartisan bill that would push President Joe Biden to address the border situation and make an effort to stop fentanyl from flowing in the U.S. has been proposed.

According to Fox News, Reps. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., and Andrew Garbarino, R-N.Y., introduced the Securing America’s Borders Against Fentanyl Act, which would authorize $20 million to research, target and detect fentanyl coming across the nation’s southern border.

In April 2022, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration announced a major, nationwide spike in fentanyl-related mass-overdose events, and the drug has become a key topic for the 2022 midterm elections.

In a joint release, Spanberger and Garbarino announced that their legislation would “more than quadruple research and development into technologies and strategies that deter and interdict fentanyl shipments.”

This bill would also require the Biden administration “to recognize the crisis at hand and build new strategies to target and detect illicit fentanyl coming through the southern border and onto America’s streets.”

Fentanyl is currently the leading cause of death among Americans age 18 to 45, according to Garbarino.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has also taken decisive action against the influx of illegal aliens at the border, with the recent authorization of the Texas National Guard to return detained immigrants to the border, reported Fox News.

Migrants are crossing the border in historic numbers, with 239,000 migrant encounters in May 2022, and 5,000 migrant apprehensions in just Texas over Independence Day weekend.

“While President Biden refuses to do his job and enforce the immigration laws enacted by Congress, the State of Texas is once again stepping up and taking unprecedented action to protect Americans and secure our southern border,” Abbott said in a statement.

“The cartels have become emboldened and enriched by President Biden’s open border policies, smuggling in record numbers of people, weapons, and deadly drugs like fentanyl.”

The Biden administration has not responded to either the proposed bill or the move by Gov. Abbot, continuing their pattern of simply ignoring the problem and hoping it will go away.
