(Corine Gatti, Headline USA) Former President Trump didn’t hold back after Megan Rapinoe missed a penalty kick leading to an early elimination at the 2023 Women’s World Cup against Sweden on Sunday — the earliest exit from the competition in team history.
Trump blasted Rapinoe and the team for the loss, which he deemed symbolic to the decay of America under President Joe Biden.
“The shocking and totally unexpected loss by the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team to Sweden is fully emblematic of what is happening to the [sic] our once great Nation under Crooked Joe Biden,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social. “Many of our players were openly hostile to America – No other country behaved in such a manner, or even close.”
Trump said the entire team as openly “hostile to America” and representing Joe Biden’s broken America, Fox News reported.
Trump ended his message by telling the soccer team and Rapinoe, “WOKE EQUALS FAILURE. “Nice shot Megan, the USA is going to Hell!!! MAGA,” he told the player who referred to missing her penalty kick as a “dark comedy.”
Rapinoe also appeared to laugh at the missed kick, stirring more controversy around the match. Explaining her initial reaction afterward, Rapinoe said, “That’s like a sick, sick joke. I’ve never hit it over, when I miss, they are saved. That’s why I had that smile on my face.”
Ever since Rapinoe kneeled during the National Anthem in support of Colin Kaepernick’s protest against police brutality, it marked the beginning of her feud with then-president Trump in 2016. The USWNT has since faced mounting criticism from Americans for not respecting the country by not taking part in the National Anthem — a sign of disrespect.
“Team USA’s downfall was delivered by anti-America, anti-woman activist Megan Rapinoe’s EMBARRASSING free kick,” noted Benny Johnson.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden took pride in the failure, congratulating the team on an excellent run.
“This team is something special and I’m looking forward to seeing how you continue to inspire Americans with your grit and determination – on and off the field,” Biden tweeted.
