(Jacob Bruns, Headline USA) After submitting to the trendy rank-choice voting system that creates a bias for establishment candidates, conservatives in the state of Alaska are fighting to try to retake their state, the Federalist reported.
The state moved to rank-choice in 2020, when a ballot proposition passed, backed by major out-of-state funding.
But now, after a disastrous midterm that left voters confused and secured several major establishment victories, conservatives have decided to fight back.
They have created an organization called “Alaskans for Honest Elections,” which was created specifically to rid the state of rank choice voting.
According to the AHE website, rank choice voting was forced onto the state by those from outside interested in manipulating the elections.
“Rank choice was sold to Alaska by outsiders as a means to control dark money. Outsiders put more of their money than ever before in our elections. It did not work! Most of their funding came from out of Alaska.”
The site also notes that, since the passage of the ballot prop which legitimized rank choice, voters have become demoralized, choosing to simply stay home.
“Rank Choice voting has proven to discourage voter turnout. This past election had the lowest turn out since 2010. It is so complicated that 1000’s did not vote. Some voters, votes are counted 2 or 3 times. Not fair!”
The system likely altered several key outcomes in the state.
First, it hindered the Trump-backed Senatorial candidate Kelly Tshibaka in her race against RINO incumbent GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski.
But perhaps more importantly, Democrat Mary Peltola demonstrably defeated former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in the race for Alaska’s at-large congressional district as a result of ranked-choice voting.
Fortunately for Alaskans, the state congress is also moving to return to a normal voting system.
Sen. Mike Shower, who recently introduced SB 2, which would repeal rank choice voting, said that he truly believes that the people of Alaska do not desire RCV.
“This rhetoric you’re hearing from Alaskans for Better Elections, from certain legislators in Alaska, and others [shows they] are living in the dream world that they have created for themselves; that they want to believe that [RCV is] this glowing example and that the public supports it,” he said.
“I truly believe if Alaska held a vote tomorrow to repeal ranked-choice voting that it would pass.”
