(Jacob Bruns, Headline USA) As promised by new House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., before the 2022 midterms, House Republicans have filed articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Rep. Pat Fallon, R-Tex., filed the articles on the first day of the new session, Jan. 3, though the filing was not made official until McCarthy was voted in as speaker earlier this week, The Hill reported.
According to the resolution, Mayorkas has failed to complete his most basic duty—that is, he has failed to secure the United States border.
Mayorkas has “engaged in a pattern of conduct that is incompatible with his duties,” Fallon wrote.
“His willful actions erode our immigration system, undermine border patrol morale, and imperil American national security,” Fallon continued. “He must be removed from office.”
While trying to shore up support from the GOP’s conservative arm, McCarthy visited the border in November, where he called on Mayorkas to resign or else face the consequences.

“House Republicans will investigate every order,” he said during the trip to El Paso, Texas, the site of the most substantial border disaster. “Every action and every failure will determine whether we can begin impeachment inquiry.”
Despite the threat, Mayorkas faces not concern of removal from office. That would require the support of at least two-thirds of both the House and Senate, where Republicans are currently in the minority.
Marsha Espinosa, assistant secretary for Public Affairs, said in a statement that Mayorkas has no intention of resigning.
“Secretary Mayorkas is proud to advance the noble mission of this Department, support its extraordinary workforce, and serve the American people,” she said. “The Department will continue our work to enforce our laws and secure our border, while building a safe, orderly, and humane immigration system.”
Per Epinosa, the border crisis is the fault of Republicans in Congress.
“Members of Congress can do better than point the finger at someone else; they should come to the table and work on solutions for our broken system and outdated laws, which they have not updated in over 40 years,” she deflected.
The resolution comes just a few days after President Joe Biden‘s first visit to the southern border.
