This Red-State Gov. May Be Dems’ Secret Weapon for Beating Trump

'You’ve got an imperative here that requires the Democrats to deliver. Their survival depends on it... '

(Jacob Bruns, Headline USA) In an op-ed written for the the Daily Caller, journalist Hayden Daniel argued that the only chance Democrats have at beating former President Donald Trump in 2024 is North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper.

The fact that he could carry North Carolina–a key swing state in recent elections–in a race against Trump, would supply him an immediate advantage.

Further, Daniel suggested that Cooper’s modest approval rating of 52% is remarkably high for a Democrat at this moment– a rating that “any of his potential rivals in the 2024 Democratic primary would kill for.”

According to Daniel, “Cooper comes across as the kind of moderate, normal Democrat that Biden claimed he would be during his inaugural address in 2021.”

In other words, Cooper is something like a moderate as the main part of the party becomes increasingly woke. Because of this, he could appeal to centrist voters that are simply not going to vote for the Democrat alternatives.

Daniel’s piece was a response to a Washington Post list of the best candidates to defeat Trump in 2024, which included names such as California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Sen. Cory Booker, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

As the list suggests, Democrats are becoming increasingly desperate as Biden declines and Harris looks increasingly unelectable.

“Everyone needs to come to terms with the reality that we’re going to get slaughtered in November,” an anonymous Democrat strategist said.

“That’s a fact. His polling has gotten worse not better. It’s indicative of the fact that people have lost confidence in his leadership. There’s nothing they’re going to be able to do.”

Former Democrat Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle told The Atlantic that 2024 could be a vital moment for the future of the Democrat party.

“You’ve got an imperative here that requires the Democrats to deliver. Their survival depends on it,” he said.
