Mexico Raises Gas Prices, Blames Americans Crossing Border

(Gregg Pupecki, Headline USA) In an unprecedented move to stop Americans from crossing the Mexican border to get gas, the Mexican government has raised gas prices.

Mexico suspended gasoline subsidies for states along its northern border as the Finance Ministry said U.S. citizens crossing into the country are draining supply,” reported Bloomberg.

The Mexican Finance Ministry trolled Americans by blaming them for diminished gas supply and higher prices.

“In the United States, gasoline prices are higher than in Mexico, and citizens of that country cross the border to stock up,” the Finance Ministry said in a statement.

“Mexican motorists have largely been shielded from big spikes in fuel prices in recent weeks due to the subsidy policy championed by the government of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who has long promised to insulate consumers from sharp price hikes at the pump,” reported Reuters.

The suspension of gas subsidies along the Mexican border, including major crossing locations like Tijuana, will bring the price up and act as a deterrent for Americans to cross over the border to tank up.

Gas prices in Mexico can be as much as $2.00 a gallon cheaper than parts of the United States, making the crossing worth the trip.

According to Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, “driving further for lower-priced petrol can pay off – but it all depends how much cheaper it is and how far you need to go to find the savings.”

The suspension of the subsidy is reported to last until April 8; but if it is successful in stopping the flow of Americans into Mexico this gaslit policy may be extended.
