(Headline USA) Failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton claimed on Thursday that the Jan. 6 Capitol protests was a “gift” to Russia, echoing a baseless conspiracy theory that she has pushed before about how Russia was involved in the riot.
Speaking at the 2022 New York State Democratic Convention, Clinton sounded like she was in full campaign mode.
“Make no mistake, our adversaries around the world are watching. Republicans are defending coup plotters,” she sleazed.
“They’re curbing voting rights at precisely the moment when democracy needs champions. When we should be standing together against autocracies like Russia and China. January 6 last year was a gift to them,” she said.
“We must reject the Big Lie about the 2020 election,” Clinton continued, referring to former President Donald Trump’s allegations that Democrats stole the presidential election from him. “And the coverup of the insurrection of last January 6.”
Clinton, who urged President Joe Biden not to concede to Trump “under any circumstances,” even if the courts did find evidence of significant voter fraud, has previously claimed that Russia was involved in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
“I hope historically we will find out who [Trump is] beholden to, who pulls his strings,” she said last January.
“I would love to see his phone records to see whether he was talking to Putin the day that the insurgents invaded our Capitol,” she said. “But we now know that not just him, but his enablers, his accomplices, his cult members, have the same disregard for democracy.”
There is no evidence that Russia had anything to do with the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Yet Clinton’s claims otherwise are part of the reason House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., decided to launch her partisan Jan. 6 subcommittee.
She agreed with Clinton at the time that a thorough investigation was necessary to determine “what Putin has on [Trump] politically, financially, or personally.”
