Swamped by Omicron, Some Say U.S. Needs More Vaccine Competition

'Despite COVID-19 being declared the pandemic of the century, American regulatory agencies remain adamantly opposed to opening the market to more participants... '

One investigative journalist is calling out Dr. Anthony Fauci and the FDA for the U.S. remaining closed to other than U.S.-developed mRNA vaccines against COVID, leaving the U.S. without adequate choices to confront the pandemic.

“The U.S. COVID-19 vaccine market has been shut out to outside competition for almost a year,” Jordan Schachtel wrote at Substack. “Despite these shots being marketed and sold as akin to a cure to a coronavirus, they have catastrophically failed to achieve that result.

“Despite COVID-19 being declared the pandemic of the century,” he wrote, “American regulatory agencies remain adamantly opposed to opening the market to more participants.”

Johnson and Johnson, Moderna and Pfizer remain the only approved vaccines in the U.S. Outside of AstraZeneca’s COVID vaccine, which is not approved in the U.S., these three are the vaccines that are most often approved by government’s worldwide, according to a COVID vaccine tracking site.

Still, some critics have pointed out that Fauci appeared to have other motives when he misspoke during an interview, claiming that India’s Covaxin has not applied for approval in the U.S.

“Notice how worked up Fauci gets at the mention of Covaxin,” said one Twitter user. “Also he lied. Bharat Biotech’s partner Ocugen, is in the process of obtaining approval from FDA for COVAXIN and also emergency-use authorization for the use of the vaccine in children.”

Fauci’s office said later that he simply misspoke when he said Covaxin had not applied for approval in the U.S.

“Bharat Biotech, the company that has developed Covaxin, has applied to the FDA for an emergency use authorization (EUA) for their vaccine,” Fauci’s office stated, according to NextStar Media Wire. “The FDA is currently evaluating the data and no decision has been made.”

The issue of the Omicron variant resistance to vaccines and of vaccine hesitancy, however, says that Fauci is wrong in asserting that the U.S. already has enough vaccines.
