President Joe Biden on Thursday called Satchel Paige, the seventh black player in Major League Baseball, “the great negro at the time—pitcher in the Negro Leagues,” which has caused #RacistJoeBiden to trend on Twitter.

Biden made the comment about Satchel Paige during a Veterans Day Ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.

“Thank you for your service to our country, and I just want to tell you, I know you’re a little younger than I am,” Biden rambled, “but I’ve adopted the attitude of the great negro at the time—pitcher in the Negro Leagues—went on to become a great pitcher in the pros and in Major League Baseball after Jackie Robinson: his name was Satchel Paige.”

“And Satchel Paige on his 47th birthday pitched a win against Chicago,” Biden continued. “And all the press went in and said Satch, it’s amazing, 47 years old—no one has ever pitched to win at age 47. How do you feel about being 47?”

“He said, boys, that’s not how I look at it. I look at it this way, ‘How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you were?,'” Biden said.

Biden told the same story about Satchel Paige to Pope Francis in late October, which ended with this awkward exchange:

Numerous corporate media outlets on Twitter and their blue-check apparatchiks claimed that Biden did not refer to Paige as a negro but simply referred to the Negro Leagues, the official term for America’s black-only baseball league.

Others on Twitter pointed out Biden’s past relationship with segregationists and Ku Klux Klan leaders.

Biden freely called blacks negros as a Senator, too.

“I think the two-party system is good for the South and good for the negro—good for the black in the South,” Biden said in 1973.
