Georgia Democrat Raphael Warnock, who is running in one of the state’s critical run-off Senate elections, claimed in late 2016 that Americans need to “repent” for supporting President Donald Trump and for worshiping “whiteness.”
Speaking at Atlanta’s Candler School of Theology in October 2016, Warnock blasted Trump, who had not yet won the election, and everyone who supported him.
“If it is true that a man who has dominated the news and poisoned the discussion for months needs to repent, then it is doubly true that a nation that can produce such a man and make his vitriol go viral, needs to repent,” Warnock said, according to the Washington Free Beacon.
“No matter what happens next month, more than a third of the nation that would go along with this, is reason to be afraid. America needs to repent for its worship of whiteness on full display this season,” he continued.
Warnock has made several troubling comments over the years.
He has praised Barack Obama’s former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who has a long history of anti-Semitism, and agreed with Wright that Israel is an “oppressive regime.”
“We celebrate Reverend Wright in the same way that we celebrate the truth-telling tradition of the black church, which, when preachers tell the truth, very often it makes people uncomfortable. And I think the country has been done a disservice by this constant playing over and over again the same soundbites outside of context,” Warnock said in 2008.
Warnock also worked for a Harlem church that once hosted Cuban dictator Fidel Castro in 1995, and he studied under Dr. James Cone, who argued that white Christians are “satanic” and practice the “theology of the anti-Christ.”
When asked whether he attended his old church’s event featuring Castro, Warnock refused to say.
“I’ve never met the Cuban dictator and so I’m not connected with him,” Warnock said.
