“What do you think is happening? I mean, it’s happening on airplanes, it’s happening on street corners,” co-host Whoopi Goldberg said after watching a video of the assault.
Co-host Joy Behar claimed a number of factors have contributed to the climate of tension.
“The pandemic, the opioid crisis, the fact that Trump was out there saying things like, ‘Just knock the hell out of them,” Behar said. “I promise you I’ll pay for the legal fees,’ when he had a heckler.”
“And then Will Smith was the pièce de résistance, if you will,” Behar continued, referring to actor Will Smith, who slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage at the Oscar’s ceremony earlier this year.
Guest co-host Lindsey Granger pushed back on Behar’s comments about Trump, saying, “This is not a political thing. Come on.”
Hostin then interjected: “I do think Trump unleashed some incivility, at least, in our country.”

Circling back to Chappelle, Granger noted we “don’t know anything about this person that went up there and tried to attack” the comedian.
Behar concluded the exchange by noting a “certain amount of impulse control lacking in the population these days.”
