(Headline USA) Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, is helping Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., fundraise for her reelection campaign as the embattled House Republican looks to defend her seat against Trump-endorsed primary challenger Harriet Hageman.
A fundraiser invitation shows Romney will attend a March 14 event for Cheney. Other guests include former Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, former chief of staff to Cheney Scooter Libby, former Rep. Barbara Comstock, R-Va., and Sheila Burke, former chief of staff to the late Sen. Bob Dole, R-Kan., among others.
General reception requires a $1,000 contribution per person, while a photo reception asks for a $5,800 contribution per couple, the invitation says. A VIP reception asks for a $10,800 contribution per couple.
Cheney is desperately trying to hold onto her seat, even though a recent straw poll among Wyoming Republicans had her losing to Hageman by a wide margin. Cheney won 59 votes from Wyoming Republican State Central Committee members, while Cheney won only six votes.
When asked about the poll, Cheney spokesman Jeremy Adler said, “The only elections that matter are in August and November.”
Cheney has been on the outs with the Republican Party ever since she voted to impeach Trump following the Jan. 6 Capitol protests and agreed to sit on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s, D-Calif., partisan Jan. 6 congressional committee.
Last February, the Wyoming Republican Party voted to censure Cheney, and in November they went a step further and voted to no longer recognize her as a member of the GOP.
Trump endorsed Hageman in September, urging Wyoming Republicans to get rid of Cheney once and for all.
“Unlike RINO [Republican in name only] Liz Cheney, Harriet is all in for America First. Harriet has my Complete and Total Endorsement in replacing the Democrats number one provider of sound bites, Liz Cheney. Make America Great Again!” Trump said in a statement.
