People’s Convoy Raises Concerns about Possible US Crackdown

'We actually have in the United States an Emergency Act that allows the president to shut down the internet...'

(Tony Sifert, Headline USA) The People’s Convoy—a collection of at least 1,000 truckers who plan to depart from California for Washington, DC, on Feb. 23—has warned that their group could face the same draconian response that has recently greeted the Canadian truckers’ Freedom Convoy in Ottawa.

The American truckers have been inspired by “the blue-collar” ethos of the Canadian truckers who form the core of the Canadian protest against COVID-related restrictions, People’s Convoy co-organizer Maureen Steele told Just the News.

But People’s Convoy organizers have also noted the cowardly and tyrannical response from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, and anticipate a similar response from the Biden administration, Steele said.

After demonizing protestors as fascists, racists, misogynists, science deniers, anti-Semites, Islamophobes, homophobes and even transphobes—in a word, “domestic extremists”—Trudeau invoked Canada’s Emergencies Act, which allows the government to take “special temporary measures to ensure safety and security during national emergencies.”

The government has already used the act “to freeze personal accounts of anyone linked with the protests without any need for a court order,” according to a report in the BBC.

Taking a page from the American J6 Commission’s overreaching investigation into pro-Trump political dissidents, the Ottawa police warned the the truckers and their supporters that “if you are involved in this protest, we will actively look to identify you and follow up with financial sections and criminal charges . . . this investigation will go on for months to come.”

Ottawa’s mayor, for his part, has promised to sell protestors’ confiscated property to compensate the city.

On the ground, Canadian police removed identifying information from their riot uniforms as they moved in to beat peaceful protestors, and mounted police have been caught on camera trampling unsuspecting women.

“We’ve taken every precaution that we can to ensure that that doesn’t happen here,” Steele told Just the News. “We cannot have what’s happening in Canada happen here, and it absolutely could.”

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., denounced Trudeau’s government and warned that similar measures could be employed in the United States, according to a report in Fox News.

“We have the same sort of statutes here, and I have long-time been an opponent of these,” Paul told Hannah Cox on the BASED Politics podcast.

“We actually have in the United States an Emergency Act that allows the president to shut down the internet,” Paul continued. “The president can just renew [the acts] every year, and there’s no real stopping him.”

Democrats, of course, are all-too-eager to prove Paul correct.

A new poll from the Trafalgar Group—exclusively shared with the Daily Wire—shows that Democrats are eager to see the Biden administration to employ similar tactics against conservatives in the United States.

While 55% of “likely general election voters disapprove” of Trudeau’s tactics, Democrats “overwhelmingly favored” his response,” the poll found.

The poll also found that 100% of Americans between the ages of 25 and 34 disapprove of Trudeau’s insane response.
