Nat’l Hockey League Conducts Survey, Finds Itself to Be Too White

(Molly Bruns, Headline USA) Despite—or perhaps because of—the disproportionate number of successful black athletes in other professional sports, leftist race-baiters are now declaring the National Hockey League to be the latest example of white supremacy in America.

A recent internal study by the NHL found that the majority of players, coaches and other staff are white, with over half of them being men.

The study, which evaluated all 32 NHL franchises combined, found that 84% of the league’s workforce is white and 62% is male.

Once you get on the ice, it noted, over 90% of the players are white—and almost all coaches and NHL officials are also white.

According to the Post Millennial, this information is being used to leverage increased diversity-based hiring within the staff.

“The whole purpose behind doing a workforce study is to provide a baseline: a fact-based baseline so that you can begin to develop very intentional and specific strategies around where you need to hire, how you need to hire, how you need to improve your brand,” Kim Davis, the NHL’s executive vice president of social impact, growth, and legislative affairs said.

“This is a good start, but there’s a ways to go,” she added.

The NHL is now requiring “race and gender report cards,” created by the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports.

Davis explained that there are many ways to increase diversity, but the league would have to “do the work.”

“You can’t expect to recruit BIPOC [black, indigenous and people of color] folks to work in the league if you don’t at the same time have your stadium fan code of conduct underway so people feel like the sport is really serious about growing the fan base,” she said. “You also have to make sure that you are reaching out to the communities from a youth participation perspective, so all of those efforts are underway.”

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced that the Board of Governors will be acting on the data, creating policies that will “produce the greatest impacts in the years to come.”

He also said the league was “committed to reckoning with those difficult moments as opportunities to demonstrate our values and create a better future.”

The NHL is not the first hockey league to come to this conclusion—the Canadian hockey league also found the sport to be too white after an “equity report” in September.

The overrepresentation of minorities—blacks in particular—in leagues such as the NFL and NBA have not stopped spurious allegations of racism from flying in the ultra-woke football and basketball organizations.

Activists such as former player Colin Kaepernick have reaped great reward from accusing the league of exploiting black athletes since many of the actual team owners are white.
