(Molly Bruns, Headline USA) A Missouri state law barred the Washington University Transgender Center at St Louis Children’s Hospital from performing child mutilating surgeries and treatments, such as prescribing puberty blockers and sex-change hormones, on minors.
A letter from Dr. David H Perlmutter, Executive Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs of Washington University’s School of Medicine, explained that the hospital could “no longer continue to operate the center in the same way,” according to the Post Millennial.
Perlmutter elaborated on the liability risks posed by the new law, making it clear that the insurance risk was too great for the health providers.
The GOP- controlled Missouri legislature passed two bills banning sex changes and barring biological men from competing in women’s sports.
Governor Mark Parson signed the bill banning sex change surgeries, puberty blockers and hormones for minors and prisoners. The bill also prevented Medicaid from covering the cost of such surgeries.
Attorney General Andrew Bailey signed an emergency order halting the experimental procedures after several accusations of malpractice. The investigation started in April; Bailey announced the move on Twitter.
“I want Missouri to be the safest state in the nation for children,” Bailey posted. “We have received disturbing allegations that individuals at the Transgender Center at St. Louis Children’s Hospital have been harming hundreds of children each year, including by using experimental drugs on them.”

Whistleblower Jamie Reed published an essay spurring the investigation where she described the “reckless affirmation” doctors gave mentally unwell teenagers, putting them on the fast-track for experimental treatment with horrific consequences. Missouri’s new laws will protect children from severe medical malpractice within the state, as well as protecting young women’s sports.
“Doctors at the Center also have publicly claimed that they do not do any gender transition surgeries on minors…This was a lie. The Center regularly refers minors for gender transition surgery,” Reed reported in an official affidavit.
