LA County Bans Official Travel to Florida, Texas

'This misguided policy is a punishment for LA County employees – not for Florida... '

(Headline USA) Los Angeles County banned taxpayer-funded travel to Florida over the state’s anti-grooming law, which leftists have dishonestly dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” law.

The LA County Board of Supervisors voted this week to bar staffers from traveling to Florida unless it would “seriously harm the county’s interests.” The motion, sponsored by Supervisors Sheila Kuehl and Hilda Solis, claims Florida’s law would promote the mistreatment of LGBT students.

“Schools should be spaced that foster open discussion, critical thinking, meaningful engagement and the safe exploration of ideas,” they wrote. “The implementation of this bill would create an atmosphere that stifled such a culture and stifles learning itself.”

Florida’s law prevents teachers in K-3rd grade classrooms from including material on gender ideology and sexual orientation in their curricula. Leftists, however, have claimed the bill prevents teachers from saying the word “gay” or talking about their personal lives – when the bill does no such thing.

Christina Pushaw, press secretary for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, said the Sunshine State is not at all worried about LA County’s response.

“The woke bureaucrats running LA County are shooting themselves in the foot with their political grandstanding,” she said. “This misguided policy is a punishment for LA County employees – not for Florida.

“Many of the tourists in Florida have visited us from states with mandates and restrictions, like California, to enjoy the freedoms and normalcy that Florida has become renowned for under Gov. DeSantis’ leadership,” Pushaw continued. “These are things that everyone can appreciate, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation.”

The LA County board also banned official travel to Texas this week after the state prohibited medical professionals from performing gender transition surgeries and administering hormone therapy to minors.

“This order is discriminatory, harmful, and just plain cruel,” the county supervisors wrote.

The travel ban only applies to county employees traveling on behalf of the county, not private citizens.
