L.A. Mayor Announces 2nd Lockdown: ‘It’s Time to Cancel Everything’

'It's time to hunker down...'

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced this week that the city is re-entering a total lockdown because of a coronavirus “surge,” discouraging residents from leaving their homes unless it is absolutely essential.

“My message couldn’t be simpler. It’s time to hunker down. It’s time to cancel everything. And if it isn’t essential, don’t do it,” Garcetti said during a press briefing on Wednesday. “Don’t meet up with others outside your household. Don’t host a gathering. Don’t attend a gathering. And following our targeted safer at home order, if you’re able to stay home, stay home.”

Garcetti’s latest order is nearly identical to Los Angeles’s original stay-at-home order, according to ABC-7.

The only difference is that the city’s public golf courses, parks, and beaches are still open, and residents can seek medical care in person.

The county also made an exception for religious services this time around.

“Our city is now close to a devastating tipping point, beyond which the number of hospitalized patients would start to overwhelm our hospital system, in turn risking needless suffering and death,” Garcetti said.

Many users, however, made it clear they have no intention of complying with Garcetti’s second lockdown.
