(Headline USA) Vice President Kamala Harris downplayed the prospect of the Biden administration opening up abortion clinics on federal lands after a number of top progressives, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., called on the White House to explore the idea.
“It’s not right now what we are discussing,” Harris said on Monday, adding that the “most important” task is to make sure women “receive the care where it is available.”
The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, sending the question of abortion’s legality back to the states to decide.
In response, leftists such as Ocasio-Cortez unveiled a long list of demands for Democrats, including packing the Supreme Court and introducing federal funding for abortion pills.
“There are also actions at President Biden’s disposal that he can mobilize,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “I’ll start with the babiest of the babiest of baby steps: Open abortion clinics on federal lands in red states right now.”
– Restrain judicial review
– Expand the court
– Clinics on federal lands
– Expand education and access to Plan C
– Repeal Hyde
– Hold floor votes codifying Griswold, Obergefell, Lawrence, Loving, etc
– Vote on Escobar’s bill protecting clinicsWe can do it!
We can at least TRY— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) June 26, 2022
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., agreed.
“[Biden should] explore just how much we can start using federal lands as a way to protect people who need access to abortions in all the states that either have banned abortions or are clearly on the threshold of doing so,” Warren told reporters.
“There is much we can do at the federal level administratively, under current law. We need to do it.”
The administration could establish Planned Parenthood outposts on national park lands, Warren continued.
“They could put up tents, have trained personnel — and be there to help people who need it,” she said.
