(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) Sen. Ted Cruz engaged in a heated exchange Thursday with a Texas-based reporter, Derick Garcia, at the southern border. Garcia asked Cruz what has the Senator done to assist the Department of Homeland Security in addressing Biden’s border crisis, prompting the senator to swiftly dismiss the question as “ridiculous and silly.”
“I want to commend you for being the media and telling a Democrat policy,” Cruz said before probing the reporter’s knowledge of illegal border crossings during the Trump administration. “Do you know anything? I asked you a question,” the senator continued.
The senator criticized the reporter’s apparent alignment with the Democratic Party’s talking points and highlighted his role in attempting to exacerbate Biden’s border crisis. Cruz touted his support for border patrol, securing the border and implemented the Trump-era “Remain in Policy” policy, asserting that these measures successfully handled the border crisis.
“The talking point of the Democrats, which this media reporter happily parrots, is ‘Gosh, the problem can’t be fixed.’ There’s one little problem with that and it is an utter and complete lie,” Cruz said, also citing how the Biden administration triggered border security chaos.
“In 2020, the last year of the Trump presidency, we had the lowest rate of illegal immigration in 45 years,” Cruz continued. “You asked what I’ve done? I’ve championed the men and women of border patrol. I’ve championed securing the border. I’ve championed ‘remain in Mexico.’ And we turned this problem around and solved it.”
Shortly after being sworn in as U.S. president in 2021, Biden called on the U.S. Congress to “restore humanity” in the immigration system, a move that many, including Cruz, believe triggered the mass flood of undocumented migrants.
“We went from Joe Biden inherited the lowest rate of illegal immigration in 45 years, and the first day in office he made political decisions to cause this problem—and you should be ashamed of yourself because you’re a reporter and you’re not reporting facts.”
Cruz’s slap down of the leftist talking point comes two days after the Trump-era Title 42 policy was lifted, which has effectively worsened the already-chaotic southern border will undocumented migrants flooding the U.S. under the belief that they will no longer be deported after May 11.
Embattled Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas held a press conference last week where he warned potential migrants from entering the U.S., asserting that the southern border was not open.
A DHS memo, however, appeared to contradict Mayorkas’s assertion. The memo, first obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation, mandated border facilities that reached 125 percent capacity to quickly release the apprehended migrants.
The New York Post reported on May 11 that approximately 28,000 undocumented migrants were under DHS detention.
