Classic ‘Scooby Doo’ Character Unmasked as Lesbian

'We made our intentions as clear as we could ten years ago... '

(Joshua Paladino, Headline USA) The new Scooby-Doo Halloween movie, Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo, portrays Velma, the gang’s nerdy intellectual, as a lesbian who falls for a black costumer designer named Coco Diablo.

The Halloween special will premier on Cartoon Network, a children’s television station, on Oct. 14, but viewers can watch it on streaming services like Amazon as of Oct. 4, NBC News reported.

Velma’s same-sex attraction features prominently throughout the movie. One scene depicts Velma looking at Coco while her cheeks become red, her glasses get foggy and she says her catchphrase, “Jinkies,” to express sexual desire, Twitchy reported.

Apparently some LGBTQ Scooby-Doo fans have wondered about Velma’s sexuality, and previous Scooby-Doo producers have stated that she was not attracted to men, but the show had never made her an open lesbian.

Producer Tony Cervone said in 2020 that he considered Velma to be a lesbian as early as 2010, when the series Mystery Incorporated began, but he said he did not have the freedom to make explicit her queer sexuality.

“We made our intentions as clear as we could ten years ago,” he wrote. “Most of our fans got it. To those that didn’t, I suggest you look closer.”
