Chip Roy Demands Hard Numbers Behind Deportation Claims

Texas Republican demands details behind sweeping enforcement claims

(José Niño, Headline USA) The Trump administration’s sweeping deportation claims face renewed scrutiny from at least one Republican congressman.

Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, wants the Department of Homeland Security to explain exactly how many people it has removed and distinguish border enforcement from deportations originating inside American communities. John Binder reported the renewed request for Breitbart News.

Roy’s latest letter to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin follows an earlier request dated June 10, 2026. He seeks a clearer accounting of progress toward President Donald Trump’s stated goal of removing one million people annually through what the administration describes as the largest deportation campaign in American history.

The reported figures describe different categories and periods. DHS officials have claimed more than 605,000 deportations during 2025. Roy also cites reports putting removals from the country’s interior at approximately 230,000 that year. Separately, officials estimate that about 2.2 million people departed voluntarily beginning in late January 2025.

Roy wants DHS to separate these categories of departures and removals so Congress can assess enforcement results.

“DHS has undoubtedly worked around the clock to deploy resources and partner with other federal and state agencies to expand interior enforcement,” Roy writes. “However, Congress must be kept apprised of an exact accounting of DHS’s critical mission of securing our nation from illegal immigration.”

Roy argues that better information would help lawmakers evaluate whether additional funding or legislation could expand removals. He also wants Congress to assess competing enforcement approaches, including targeting people with serious criminal records and conducting workplace operations that might produce numerous arrests.

The demand for transparency extends beyond the latest letter. In its June report, Breitbart identified Reps. Eric Burlison, Eli Crane, Andrew Clyde, and Mark Harris as Republican representatives joining Roy in seeking detailed records. Their questions covered arrests and removals by state, workplace enforcement, and operations at courthouses, jails, and residences.
