(Mark Pellin, Headline USA) The ongoing negotiations to restore a grossly flawed Iran nuclear deal that was originally brokered by the Obama administration has showcased the dangerously inept foreign policy objectives of the Biden administration, according to leading GOP members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
“The Biden foreign policy is a disaster across the globe,” Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said during a press conference this week.
“Afghanistan is a disaster. Russia is a disaster. Ukraine is a disaster. China is a disaster,” Cruz said. “But there may be no part of the globe more dangerous in the Biden foreign policy than Iran.”
Under Biden’s watch, Cruz said, Iran has been enriching uranium “such that it may only be weeks away from developing nuclear weapons,” while it has also evaded any significant sanctions and has returned to selling more than a million barrels of oil a day.
Cruz roasted the Biden administration for “furiously bending over backwards to surrender to the Ayatollah,” during the ongoing negotiations, which Cruz said reveals the “utter incoherence and absurdity” of Biden’s foreign policy.
Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., was equally critical.
“We are reliving the nightmare of the Obama-Biden administration,” he said.
“Russia is invading Ukraine. We have the highest gas prices ever. And now the White House is pursuing a bad deal with Iran and allowing the Russians to negotiate on our behalf. We should never go back to a deal with Iran.
That sentiment was shared by Sen. Jim Risch, R-Idaho, who called Biden’s approach to the Iran deal “a colossal problem for the world.”
“Their objective is to have a nuclear weapon,” Risch said of Iran. “Our objective is, and the world’s objective is, that they do not have a nuclear weapon.”
Risch said it was folly to expect the Iranians to act in good faith during negotiations, but that the Biden administration seems willing to proceed under that premise.
“Look, I don’t speak Farsi,” he said. “If I did, I doubt I could use the words ‘good faith.’ I don’t know if they exist, because I have never seen good faith on the part of the Iranians.”
Yet from the outset, Biden has been adamant on restoring the nuclear deal his old boss inked.
“From the first days of this administration, the Biden foreign policy team sets as its top foreign policy goal to negotiate a brand new nuclear agreement with Iran,” Cruz said.
“The Obama nuclear agreement was catastrophically dangerous, and President Biden wants nothing more than to reenter a deal that is even worse than the Obama deal.
“This administration wants nothing more than to give [Iran] hundreds of billions of dollars in sanctions relief,” Cruz said, adding that Biden has designated Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to be his chief negotiator with predictable results.
“This Iran deal, if and when it is announced, will be a massive win for Vladimir Putin,” Cruz predicted.
“The first thing we need to do about this is walk away,” Risch said. “It is absolutely stunning that this deal is being negotiated by two of our worst enemies on the planet.”
“Mr. President, you are the only one in America doing business with the Russians,” Risch said. “Don’t have them negotiating for us. Walk on this deal.”
