(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) An NBC affiliate in Boston triggered widespread condemnation after its controversial soft doxxing of the lone holdout juror in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial.
In a story written by self-described “investigative reporter” Ryan Kath, the juror’s criminal background and interviews with his family took center stage.
Critics quickly slammed Kath and NBC 10 for the bizarre attention directed at the juror, who declined to side with the other 11 jurors in finding Clancy not criminally responsible by reason of insanity for the murder of her three children.
In the piece, Kath reported that the juror, a black man, has an active restraining order against him and is facing a pending eviction case over unpaid rent.
The juror also faced an assault charge following a dispute with his now-ex-wife, though the charges were ultimately dropped after the couple divorced.
NBC 10 and Kath acknowledged the legal concerns surrounding the potential doxxing of the individual, particularly as the list of jurors remains under seal.
“We are not identifying him at this time because he has chosen not to speak publicly and the jury list is currently impounded,” Kath wrote. “However, we wanted to share the details that experts say should have raised red flags about how he filled out his juror questionnaire.”
But critics questioned why NBC 10 was devoting such extraordinary attention to the personal life of the lone juror who refused to go along with the majority.
What NBC10 Boston has done to the lone holdout juror is a journalistic disgrace. After eleven white jurors failed to pressure the jury’s only Black member into abandoning his independent judgment, NBC10 effectively joined the campaign to destroy him.
While the jury list remains…

The criticism went beyond the Clancy case, with critics warning that the piece could serve as a bullying tactic with implications for future jurors.
Critics warned that such reporting could coerce jurors into groupthink, potentially making them fearful of breaking with the majority in high-profile cases if their personal lives are at risk of being exposed.
We’ve never seen anything like this before. A man was conscripted into jury duty by the government. He performed his civic duty and followed his conscience, refusing to acquit a woman who confessed to systematically executing her three children. The defense attorney immediately…

Critics also questioned whether Kath investigated the other 11 jurors with the same scrutiny. Others argued that the media appeared more outraged by the black juror who refused to go along with the majority than by Clancy, the woman Massachusetts prosecutors accused of murdering her three children.
It'd be poetic justice if people did to the NBC Boston affiliate what they did to that juror — just a deep dive into all the employees' backgrounds. It was inexcusable to provoke harassment of a juror who did his civic duty.

NBC 10’s reporting also earned a Community Note fact-check on X highlighting that Massachusetts law forbids the harassment of jurors.
The note warned that “Massachusetts law prohibits anyone ‘to engage in an act directed at a [juror] that seriously alarms or annoys such person’ with a penalty of up to 10 years imprisonment.”

According to prosecutors, Clancy murdered her three children after strangling them with a workout band on Jan. 24, 2023.
Her defense has argued that Clancy carried out the attacks while suffering from postpartum psychosis and experiencing hallucinations and paranoid delusions.
Her legal team has blamed the medical system for failing to adequately protect her and address the warning signs surrounding her mental health.
