(Headline USA) Former President Donald Trump called on Republicans to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove President Joe Biden from office after the Biden administration announced a prisoner swap deal with Iran this week.
On Monday, the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Biden administration informed Congress it had moved forward with a deal with Iran to unfreeze $6 billion in sanctions for the release of five detained Americans.
Trump slammed the deal as evidence that Biden is “incompetent” and mentally unfit to serve.
“So, lets get this straight! We did a hostage TRADE with Iran. We gave them 5 very tough, smart people that they desperately wanted. We likewise got back 5 people BUT, we also gave them 6 BILLION DOLLARS!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The former president, who is running for the GOP nomination to challenge Biden in 2024, also suggested corruption is behind Biden’s deal.
“How much of a kickback does Crooked Joe Biden get? Does anyone realize how much money 6 Billion Dollars is? When I was President, I got back 58 hostages for ZERO money. Remember Pastor Brunson? It sets a TERRIBLE precedent. Republicans, call out the 25th Amendment, NOW! Biden is INCOMPETENT!” he said.
The 25th Amendment, which was ratified in 1967, stipulates the order of succession when a president is “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.”
Congressional Republicans have also accused Biden of withholding key details of the Iran deal.
“President Biden has established a secret nuclear deal with the Iranian regime that is being kept from Congress and the American people,” Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said in a statement.
The Biden administration, however, has denied any wrongdoing.
As we have said from the outset, what is being pursued here is an arrangement wherein we secure the release of 5 wrongfully held Americans,” said National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson.
“This remains a sensitive and ongoing process,” she continued. “We have kept Congress extensively informed from the outset of this process—long before today—and we will continue to do so, including with additional already scheduled briefings this week.”
