(Headline USA) House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., directed the House’s committees this week to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden over his role in his family’s foreign business dealings.
“House Republicans have uncovered serious and credible allegations into President Biden’s conduct. Taken together, these allegations paint a picture of a culture of corruption,” McCarthy said on Tuesday.
The president is facing “allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption,” McCarthy added, noting that an impeachment inquiry is the “next logical step.”
“They warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives. That’s why today I am directing our House committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden,” he said.
House Oversight Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, plan to give a presentation on Thursday to House Republicans outlining the case against Biden, according to reports.
It is not clear whether they then plan to hold a formal House vote on the inquiry, which McCarthy said last month would be a requirement. A formal vote would require 218 lawmakers to support the inquiry, and it is not clear whether House Republicans would be able to reach that number, with several GOP lawmakers expressing skepticism about the move.
Senate Republicans have also tossed water on the idea.
“I don’t think they got enough time to do it,” Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., said on Tuesday. “I’m not for going through another damn trial to be honest with you. You better have an ironclad case. When you go after a former president or a president, have all of your ducks in a row.”
Conservatives in the House have also accused McCarthy of using the Biden investigation to distract from the upcoming appropriations bill deadline.
“Hiding behind impeachment to screw America with status quo massive funding … will not end well,” Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, said.
