Homeless Woman Killed by Lawnmower While Napping in Calif. Park

'We know there’s a lot of homeless people out there...'

(Jacob Bruns, Headline USA) A California lawn care worker ran over a 27-year-old homeless woman sleeping in the tall weeds with a lawnmower, leading to her gruesome death, Breitbart reported Sunday.

According to the report, the worker was “driving a John Deere tractor with a pull-behind motor,” and he did not know the woman was sleeping in the weeds until it was too late.

The woman, Christine Chavez, leaves a nine-year-old daughter behind.

She often spent time at Beard Brook Park, according to reports.

Her father, Christopher Chavez, said that he remains horrified by what he saw at the scene before he called the local police.

“There were many pieces of [her remains] around there, and I called the police,” Chavez told reporters.

“I went there, and I still have pieces of bones, like pieces of her skull and some teeth. It’s terrible.”

The park had been purchased by E & J Gallo Winery just one day before. The winery hired Grover Landscaping Services to clear the overgrown area.

The winery released a report soon thereafter explaining what had happened and expressing condolences.

The accident, they noted, involved “an individual who was not visible and laying in a tall, weeded area.”

After the incident, which took place on July 7 around noon, “the contractor immediately contacted the Modesto Police Department, and upon arrival, MPD officers declared the individual was deceased.”

Esmer Chavez, Christine’s sister, blamed society for its lack of concern for the homeless population.

“It’s just the worst way to die without doing absolutely nothing wrong,” Esmer wrote on her GoFundMe page for her sister’s funeral expenses.

“And it hurts so much that she was just sleeping, not doing any harm to anyone. We know there’s a lot of homeless people out there, and I can’t believe the driver of the tractor didn’t see my little sister laying on the floor.”
