(Headline USA) With his White House tenure and family connections reeling under multiple investigations, President Joe Biden laughed off a question this weekend about whether he would pardon former President Donald Trump, should Trump be convicted in any one of myriad witch hunts passing as federal probes of which he is the subject.
The question came from Fox News reporter Peter Doocy following comments by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is running for the GOP presidential nomination, that he would mull pardoning Trump if elected.
“Where are you on the idea of a president pardoning Trump?” Doocy asked Biden as he prepared to board Marine One.
Biden started laughing and waved off the question, saying, “It’s a great question … I’ll see you guys.”
Trump is currently under investigation by federal special counsels for his alleged role in the Jan. 6 Capitol protests and his handling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago.
Most recently, Trump was charged by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg for alleged campaign finance violations regarding a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign.
The charges have been blasted by Republicans across the board, including Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah.
“I believe President Trump’s character and conduct make him unfit for office. Even so, I believe the New York prosecutor has stretched to reach felony criminal charges in order to fit a political agenda,” Romney, who twice voted to convict Trump in impeachment trials, said in a statement. “The prosecutor’s overreach sets a dangerous precedent for criminalizing political opponents and damages the public’s faith in our justice system.”
Even liberal professor Richard Hasen, a campaign finance expert at the University of California, Los Angeles, called Bragg’s case a “circus.”
“It is said that if you go after the king, you should not miss,” Hasen said. “In this vein, it is very easy to see this case tossed for legal insufficiency or tied up in the courts well past the 2024 election before it might ever go to trial. It will be a circus that will embolden Trump, especially if he walks.”
