(Molly Bruns, Headline USA) After years of promoting the Big Apple as a sanctuary city, New York City Democrat Mayor Eric Adams will open a former prison in Harlem to house illegal immigrants.
New York City has been dealing with an influx of 70,000 migrants in the last year and continually struggled to find housing for their guests. Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul approved the plan to house the migrants in the former Lincoln Correctional Center into a shelter for migrants.
“We’re grateful to the state for providing this site and partnering with the city to open this space as a temporary site for asylum seekers as New York City continues to face this humanitarian crisis,” Adams’ office said in a statement.
According to Breitbart, the border crossers will be kept in actual jail cells.
Up until this point, Adams was contracting local hotels, such as the historic Roosevelt Hotel, for hundreds of thousands of dollars, forcing the city’s taxpaying citizens to foot a $75 million bill.
The surge of illegal immigrants strained the city’s public resources, infrastructure, housing prices and services for New Yorkers. Despite the problems the migrants caused the city, Hochul encouraged the arrival of migrants.
“There are not enough workers here in the state of New York … at the same time we have this historic labor shortage, we also have this unprecedented influx of individuals arriving in New York — all of them legally seeking asylum,” she said. “They’re eager to work, they want to work, they came here in search of work, for a new future.”
The citizens paid an estimated $5 million every day to attempt to deal with the issue. Since there are more than 30,000 illegals who are currently being housed in New York City’s taxpayer-funded facilities, the total amount would be $10.89 million.
Despite that the city begged both the Biden and Hochul administrations to send money to cover the fees, the Federal Emergency Management Agency only gave a mere $8 million to the city in December, which wouldn’t be enough to cover even two current days.
