(Headline USA) Democrats are reportedly worried that twice-failed Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams will try to run for the office again.
Abrams said during an appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show” in January that she “will likely run again.”
“If at first you don’t succeed, try try again. If it doesn’t work, you try again,” she said at the time.
She has not confirmed which office she’d like to hold, but told the Atlanta Journal–Constitution on Thursday that she believes “political office” is a “tool for the issues I am committed to tackling.”
Several Democrats, however, are hoping Abrams takes a seat.
“Interviews with more than three dozen Democratic officials, party leaders and activists suggest she may not have the same unified support she enjoyed after her first defeat to Kemp in 2018,” the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Monroe County Democratic Party chair Yvonne Stuart, for example, said Abrams has fallen “into the trap of becoming too much of a celebrity.”
“I do believe there might be another charismatic Democrat that can take us all the way in 2026,” she said.
Bartow County Democratic Party chair David Ellis–Mendoza agreed, and said Abrams’s team “repeatedly” failed to “build ties with rural and exurban counties.”
“I believe that there are opportunities for others to step up to the plate and run for governor,” Ellis–Mendoza said.
Several Democrats admitted they are worried Abrams would just keep losing.
“The party needs to move forward. And going 0-3 isn’t a way to go forward. Does she really want to be the next Guy Millner?” former head of the Georgia Democratic Party Bobby Kahn said, referencing another perennial Georgia loser.
Another operative took aim at the way Abrams conducted her last campaign, citing her decision to promptly fire dozens of staffers after taking on more than $1 million in debt.
“It’s incredibly bad planning, and it shows where their values are at,” a senior Democratic official said. “You can’t look up one day and realize you can’t pay the bills.”
