House Republicans Introduce Resolution to Expunge Trump J6 Impeachment

(Headline USAHouse Republicans introduced a resolution this week to erase former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment, which followed the Jan. 6 Capitol protests.

Introduced by Rep. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., and endorsed by more than 30 other House Republicans, the resolution says Democrats’ charges against Trump were partisan and dishonest.

“Democrats used their second impeachment resolution to once again weaponize one of the most grave and consequential powers of the House,” Mullin said in a statement.

“This was never about the Constitution; it was rooted in personal politics.”

The incitement of insurrection charge, specifically, “contains a subjective account of that which transpired at the Capitol on January 6, 2021” and “omits any discussion of the circumstances, unusual voting patterns, and voting anomalies of the 2020 presidential election itself,” according to the resolution.

The resolution also points to a number of claims made by Trump about fraud that took place during the election. It says Trump won 18 of the 19 bellwether counties that historically correspond with a presidential election victory, and that Trump won more votes in 2020 than he did in 2016, yet he still supposedly lost the race.

House GOP Caucus Chairwoman Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., was one of the many Republicans who endorsed the resolution, which stands very little chance of passing the Democrat-controlled chamber.

“From the beginning of this sham process, I stood up against Nancy Pelosi’s blatant attempt to shred the Constitution as House Democrats ignored precedent and failed to follow the legislative process,” Stefanik said in a statement.

“But President Donald Trump was rightfully acquitted, and it is past time to expunge Democrats’ sham smear against not only President Trump’s name, but against millions of patriots across the country.”

Mullin introduced a similar resolution calling for the expungment of Trump’s first impeachment back in 2019. That measure, however, only earned endorsements from seven Republicans.
