Kentucky AG Daniel Cameron Launches GOP Bid for Gubernatorial Run

'He’s never going to change, so we have to change our governor... '

(Preston Parra, Headline USA) A former attorney and current attorney general in the state of Kentucky, Daniel Cameron, launched his bid Wednesday for a gubernatorial run in the state.

Cameron, a Republican, broke a long-standing historical barrier in Kentucky by becoming the first black man to hold the office since 1944.

In a tweet earlier today, he said that he was running for the seat to “deliver Bold Conservative Leadership to the Commonwealth.”

Back in 2019, former President Donald Trump endorsed Cameron’s then-campaign for attorney general and Cameron delivered a well-received speech at the 2020 Republican National Convention. It is currently unknown whether Cameron will receive that same support in his race for governor; however, it is likely due to the fact that Kentucky’s current governor, Andy Beshear, is an established Democrat, while Cameron has a conservative track record and solid name recognition among Republicans in the state.

Cameron has maintained that Beshear has failed miserably in representing the values of average Kentuckians and that, “He’s never going to change, so we have to change our governor.”

Beshear, however, has garnered broad support following his handling of a string of destructive tornados that have hit the state during his term.

Cameron, it should be noted, has had a long-standing friendship with Senate leader Mitch McConnell, who hails from the bluegrass state of Kentucky. In fact, Cameron served as McConnell’s legal counsel in 2015, where he remained for two additional years. That could be seen as a benefit or detriment when it comes to garnering strong MAGA and Trump support.

While serving in D.C., Cameron was tasked with upholding standards set forth by the Senate Select Committee on Rules and Administration.

Cameron will be running against the current Agricultural Commissioner Ryan Quarles, as well as Kentucky’s Auditor of Public Accounts Mike Harmon, on top of a few other well-known Republicans rumored to be considering the bid in the gubernatorial race.

Following Cameron’s announcement, Republican Secretary of State Michael Adams kicked off his own bid for Cameron’s seat as attorney general of Kentucky.
