(Molly Bruns, Headline USA) Supreme Court Jsutice Clarence Thomas said in a statement that he and his fellow justices would not be “bullied” into changing their minds, The Daily Wire reported.
Speaking at the 11th Circuit Judicial Conference in Atlanta, Thomas made the comments regarding the recently leaked early opinion draft which indicated the court might overturn Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey.
The leak immediately started a wave of leftists protests and rage from elected Democratic officials.
Thomas noted that “we are becoming addicted to wanting particular outcomes, not living with the outcomes we don’t like.”
“We can’t be an institution that can be bullied into giving you just the outcomes you want. The events from earlier this week are a symptom of that,” Thomas continued.
Since the draft was leaked, protestors have gathered outside of the Supreme Court and outside of the homes of individual justices.
Several Democratic Senators, including Elizabeth Warren, D-MA, and Amy Koluchar, D-MN, have renewed calls to codify the laws an pass legislation which would institute a federal right to abortion.
Sen. Susan Collins, R-ME, has introduced her own bill to codify abortion. She stated she would not support the Democrats’ bill because it was “too broad” and did not allow for exceptions for Catholic hospitals on religious grounds.
Others have argued that the draft proves it is time for President Joe Biden to expand the court.
“We must abolish the filibuster, codify Roe v. Wade, and move urgently to expand the Court so that we forever protect the constitutional right to abortion,” said Sen. Ed Markey, D-MA, adding, “Republicans made up their mind a long time ago: they would do whatever it takes to destroy Roe v. Wade. We must expand the Court to protect it.”
The early opinion draft, which was written by Justice Samual Alito, may or may not be the Court’s final decision.
