(Molly Bruns, Headline USA) House Republicans sent Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger a letter bringing his attention to a voter education initiative lead by failed gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, the Daily Caller reported.
The letter, written by Reps. Rodney Davis, R-Ill., and Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., asked Raffensperger about his plans to combat the initiative, which is taught in Atlanta’s public schools.
The initiative invited high school students to attend a democracy class hosted with the help of two nonprofits, both founded by Abrams—the “New Georgia Project” and “Rock the Vote.”
The lesson was focused on “voting rights,” according to documents obtained in an open records request.
In the letter, the representatives said the program “taught students that voter identification laws are ‘restrictive’ and make voting ‘more difficult,’ and that policies limiting ‘flexible voting options’ like mail-in voting restrict people’s ‘freedom to vote.’”
The representatives added that “Nse Ufot, the CEO of Abrams’ New Georgia Project, which has the stated purpose of ‘flip[ping] Georgia blue,’ has made her low opinion of Republicans clear by stating in a recent article, ‘I’m not in the business of pretending like [Republicans] are anything but a criminal enterprise that is intent on attacking our democracy and our country and our government from the inside,’” according to the Washington Times.
Georgia’s Election Integrity Act, which was signed into law in 2021, requires Georgia citizens to have an ID, expanded early voting in most Georgia counties, requires that counties have at least one absentee drop box and gives the state legislature more control over election administration.
Abrams called the legislation “racist” and “a redux of Jim Crow in a suit and tie.”
“In fact, the secretary of state and the governor went to great pains to assure America that Georgia’s elections were secure,” Abrams said in March 2021. “And so the only connection that we can find is that more people of color voted and it changed the outcome of elections in a direction that Republicans do not like.”
Raffensperger has yet to publicly reply to the letter from the representatives.
