Kinzinger Says He Would ‘Love’ To Run Against Trump in 2024

'Even if he crushed me, like in a primary, to be able to stand up and call out the garbage is just a necessary thing... '

(Headline USA) Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., said he would “love” to run against former President Donald Trump during the 2024 primary.

“I would love it. I really would,” Kinzinger, who is not running for reelection to the House this year, told the Huffington Post.

“Even if he crushed me, like in a primary, to be able to stand up and call out the garbage is just a necessary thing, regardless of who it is. … I think it’d be fun.”

Asked how serious he is about a potential 2024 run, Kinzinger said he is still weighing what to do regarding his political future.

“I’ll make a decision when we get there, if there’s a need and a desire. It’s truly not anything I’m planning right now, but I’m not going to rule it out,” he said.

“Look, if we’re in a position, if it’s just terrible candidates and the country’s in a worse place? Maybe,” he added. “But there’s no grand plan right now.”

Kinzinger went on to complain that he is “exhausted” with politics right now.

“I don’t know. Maybe I would have run for governor. Maybe I would have run for Senate. Who knows? But yeah, my time in the House is, mercifully, coming to an end,” he said.

The Illinois Republican was one of the only House GOP members to vote to impeach Trump after the Jan. 6 Capitol protests. He has since become a vocal critic of not just Trump, but of the entire Republican Party, especially other members who still support Trump.

In response, the Republican National Committee voted to censure Kinzinger and Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., who also voted to impeach Trump and is running for reelection this year. Both Kinzinger and Cheney also joined Democrats on the partisan Jan. 6 congressional committee.

“Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger crossed a line,” said RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel.

“They chose to join Nancy Pelosi in a Democrat-led persecution of ordinary citizens who engaged in legitimate political discourse that had nothing to do with violence at the Capitol. That’s why Republican National Committee members and myself overwhelmingly support this resolution,” she said of the censure.
