Ted Cruz: Texas Secession on the Horizon?

'We're not there yet, and if there comes a point where it's hopeless, then I think we take NASA, we take the military, we take the oil...'

Speaking to an audience at Texas A&M University, Republican Senator Ted Cruz said that he could understand the sentiment of people who wanted Texas to become independent of the U.S. but that he wasn’t “there yet” in regards to Texas secession, according to Business Insider.

“If the Democrats end the filibuster, if they fundamentally destroy the country,” Cruz said, “if they pack the Supreme Court, if they make DC a state, if they federalize elections, if they massively expand voter fraud, there may come a point where it’s hopeless.”

Cruz said that Texas was helping prevent the U.S. from “going off the cliff” and that it had a responsibility to the rest of the country to act as a counterweight to the irresponsibility of the Democrats.

“I think Texas has a responsibility to the country and I’m not ready to give up on America. I love this country,” said Cruz according to CBS News.

Cruz was responding to a question from a student who asked what the state would do if Texas seceded. Cruz joked that popular podcaster and comedian Joe Rogan could become the president of Texas, since Rogan moved to Texas in July.

“We’re not there yet, and if there comes a point where it’s hopeless, then I think we take NASA, we take the military, we take the oil,” Cruz said divvying up America.

Texas has long enjoyed a reputation for being independent of the rest of the country, since it was incorporated into the U.S. after becoming an independent republic when it broke away from Mexico in 1836.

Cruz was appearing at a live taping of the podcast the Verdict at Texas A&M.

Sponsored by the Young America’s Foundation,  the show tours college campuses and “breaks down the most important news stories of the day and reveals what they mean” with over 70 conservative hosts available.
