CNN’s Chris Cuomo claimed gun control and criminal justice reform will only happen when “white people’s kids start getting killed.”
“Shootings, gun laws, access to weapons. Oh, I know when they’ll change,” he said. “When your kids start getting killed. White people’s kids start getting killed.”
Cuomo then attempted to sound like a concerned white parent, asking, “What’s going on with these police? Maybe we shouldn’t even have police.”
“That kind of madness,” he continued. “That kind of mania. That will be you. That will be the majority. Because it’s your people.”
Later on in his monologue, Cuomo speculated that police reform might begin to happen if black people begin to arm themselves and form militias.
“You’ll see a wave of change in access and accountability,” he said. “We saw it in the ‘60s.”
Ultimately, however, change won’t happen unless Americans “come together,” Cuomo added.
“Us and them. Us and them. There’s never a solution that doesn’t begin with ‘we.’ We the people,” he said.
During his show hand-off with CNN’s Don Lemon, Cuomo also said he enjoyed the Black Lives Matter protests last summer because he liked “seeing constituencies come together even if they don’t share the same experience.”
“When they get loud and yell at the police and how angry they are, nobody says everything you are supposed to say is polite,” he began. “They have every right to yell and be angry about it. I would argue if you are not angry and you are not outraged, it doesn’t have the energy that catches the ear of those in power.”
