Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious diseases expert, said this week that Americans should wear two masks instead of just one to protect themselves from the spread of COVID-19, claiming without evidence that doing so “makes common sense.”
During an interview with NBC News, Fauci was asked whether double-masking would make a difference.
“It likely does,” he said. “I mean, this is a physical covering to prevent droplets and virus to get in. So if you have a physical covering with one layer, and you put another layer on, it just makes common sense that it likely would be more effective.”
This time last year, Fauci advised Americans against wearing masks at all, saying they would be ineffective at stopping the spread of the virus for anyone who was not already sick.
