House Republicans are calling for a congressional hearing to examine the violence against President Trump’s supporters during the “Million MAGA March” in Washington, D.C., last weekend.
House Oversight Committee Ranking Member James Comer, R-Ky., Reps. Jody Hice, R-Ga., and Chip Roy, R-Texas, wrote a letter to committee chairman Carolyn Maloney asking her to hold a hearing and demand answers from D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.
The Republicans said Bowser gladly dispatched D.C. police forces to protect Black Lives Matter protesters earlier this summer, even though they were destroying businesses and throwing projectiles at law enforcement, but remained silent when counter-protesters began attacking Trump supporters last weekend.
“We respectfully request a hearing on the violence directed at supporters of President Trump on November 14, 2020,” they wrote to Maloney. “These supporters were exercising their First Amendment right to peacefully assemble within the District of Columbia.”
They added: “The failure of the city’s leaders to afford basic protections to persons who may hold different political viewpoints from their own appears to be another concerning example of viewpoint discrimination in the District.”
More than 20 counterprotesters were arrested last weekend following violent clashes after the “Million MAGA March,” which attracted thousands of pro-Trump supporters.
Multiple videos showed leftist activists hurling projectiles at Trump supporters and harassing families and elderly citizens while other demonstrators cheered.
