Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, urged Americans to “get behind” Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.
The failed 2012 GOP candidate slammed President Donald Trump for not accepting the unofficial results of the Nov. 3 election as projected by several corporate media outlets.
Trump has pledged not to concede while his campaign takes its case to court in at least four states.
Whether due to narrow margins triggering recounts after a massive mail-in voting operation driven by the Left’s coronavirus fearmongering, or due to credible reports of widespread vote fraud, at least seven states appear to remain very much in play—all but one of which (Nevada) backed Trump in the 2016 election.
Romney, however, claimed without evidence that the “statisticians have come to a conclusion” that Americans need to accept, even if Trump does not.
“I think we get behind the new president,” Romney told CNN. “Unless, for some reason, that’s overturned, we get behind the new president, wish him the very best.”
When asked if he is concerned with Trump “saying that he won” the election, Romney said he was not surprised by Trump’s reaction.
“You’re not going to change the nature of President Trump in these last days, apparently, of his presidency. He is who he is,” Romney said.
“And he has a relatively relaxed relationship with the truth,” Romney claimed. “And so he’s going to keep on fighting until the very end.”
But Romney—the only GOP member of Congress to vote in favor of impeaching the president for what hard evidence ultimately proved to be specious allegations of “abuse of power”—said he was now convinced that Trump inevitably would be forced to concede.
“Once all remedies have been exhausted, if those are exhausted in a way that’s not favorable to him, he will accept the inevitable,” Romney said. “But don’t expect him to go quietly in the night. That’s not how he operates.”
Romney admitted that he understands why Trump wants to fight the results of the election, but he argued that at the end of the day Trump “doesn’t have a choice” but to concede.
“People think, well, gosh, can we remove him from office?” Romney said. “You don’t have to remove him from office. If he doesn’t win on a legitimate basis, why, then, he ceases to be president when Joe Biden is sworn in. It’s as simple as that.”
Romney then lamented that Trump was following the advice offered to Biden by failed 2016 candidate Hillary Clinton that he should not concede “under any circumstances” while there were still legal challenges to be had.
“I would prefer to see the world watching a more graceful departure, but that’s just not in the nature of the man,” Romney said.
Romney’s comments come just a few days after it was reported that he is being considered for a Cabinet position if Biden becomes president.
The Buffalo Chronicle reported over the weekend that Biden asked Romney to head the Department of Health and Human Services.
Romney is reportedly discussing the nomination with his family, but is expected to accept the appointment if it is offered, according to the Chronicle.
While he is still in the Senate, Romney said he would encourage Senate Republicans to “work with” Biden if he does become the next president in January.
But overall, Democrats will need to do the lion’s share of compromise, Romney noted.
“I think the president-elect recognizes that Republicans gained seats in Congress. Republicans overall did better than Democrats overall in this election,” he explained.
“So, if it comes down to a question about, well, what does America want in terms of policy, pretty clear they don’t want the Green New Deal,” Romney continued. “Pretty clear they don’t want Medicare for all, don’t want higher taxes, don’t want to get rid of oil and gas and coal. The American people are more conservative than they are progressive.”
